Being Born Again Couture, Australian Financial Review (AFR), Friday April 16, 2010

In a fashion-meets-art collaboration next Thursday evening in Sydney, the Being Born Again Couture fashion show will take place in the National Art School.

Organiser and Managing Director Davina Reichman says she approached a number of fashion designers, who were then given carte blanche to choose their own artistic inspiration.

Akira Isogawa collaborated with Lindy Lee (right), Nicola Finetti with Guy Peppin, Marnie Skillings with Tracey Moffat and Dhini with Pat Brassington, to name a few. Some designers have Incorporated a design by their chosen artist into the fabrics; others will reveal different interpretations. The evening will feature a catwalk show and a number of installations, including an Andy Uprock light display, spelling out the letters in Being Born Again 2010 in bold coloured cups. Some of the results will be auctioned off on the night while others will be stored at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

Thursday April 22, at the National Art School, Cell Block Theatre, Forbes St Darlinghurst; 6pm - 9pm. Tickets $30 students, $70 general public. Visit www.beingbornagain.net for more details.

Art weaves its spell

What do you get when you pair 10 top fashion designers with 10 leading artists? According to fashion entrepanear Davina Reichman, an explosion of creative expression and some hair-raising moments with missed deadlines.

Ms Reichman, a passionate fashion devotee and MBA graduate will launch her D&Em fashion label.... The concept has had flow-on effects with some designers using the artistic inspiration throughout their colletions. "Michael Lo Sordo is taking inspiration from the collaboration (with Chris Horder of Liverpool Galleries) and doing his whole range for this season in that pastelly tie-dyed fabric, so it's been recieved wonderfully".

A Fashionable Life

As Sydney's high society polish their stilettos in anticipation of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week next month, one Australian graduate is happily neck deep in garments and pins - Davina Reichman is preparing to launch her label D&Em and create a unique fashion show that pulls together artists like Lindy Lee and Debra Dawes and renowned fashion designers such as Akira Isogawa and Nicola Finetti.

The event, called the 'Being Born Again Couture Fashion Show', aims to celebrate the work of 10 local artists and 10 local fashion designers by displaying artists' work on fashion designers' garments. The show is being held at the National School of Art's (NAS) Cell Block Theatre one week prior to Fashion Week on Thursday 22 April.

"The idea stems from art amalgamating with fashion: the fashion designers collaborate with the artists to produce innovative couture garments, creating a unique new medium for expression," says Reichman.

"The mix of contemporary artists with cutting-edge designers, performance art and installations is set to be a celebration of creativity and talent like no other."

The 20 collaborators are: Akira Isogawa and Lindy Lee; Nicola Finetti and Guy Peppin; Anna Westcott and Kate Scardifield; Marnie Skillings and Tracey Moffatt; Tim O'Connor and Debra Dawes; Dhini and Pat Brassington; Michael Lo Sordo and Christopher Horder; Leigh Schubert and Susan Andrews; and CASI((O)) ONO and ANTO.

In addition to the catwalk show, the event will feature a trapeze artist, light display, art installations and musical acts including WIM and Jack Colwell and The Owls.

The MBA graduate (2006) has long dreamt of working in fashion, and started by designing pieces for her own wardrobe. "I have always followed my own path and instincts when it comes to design, creating styles that are whimsical yet confident with appealing feminine aesthetics," Reichman says.

She plans to turn the Being Born Again Couture Fashion Show into an annual event with the aim of "harnessing the creative abilities of artists and fashion designers alike."

Catch the Being Born Again Couture Fashion Show at the National Art School in Darlinghurst on the night of Thursday 22 April. Visit www.beingbornagain.net to find out more.

Birth

I am so unfashionably late on talking about the Being Born Again fashion show, but it's just too fabulous for me to let it flutter by. The event was organised by the rather lovely Davina Reichman who has featured on this blog before. Collaborative creativity between artists and fashion designers was the driving force behind the show. My personal favourite is the CASI((O)) & ANTO creation: [picture]

Though I also have a lot of love for Guy Peppin/ Nicola Finetti's work: [picture]

And, whaddayano, Tracey Moffatt's work made an appearance too. She was the subject of this blog's very first post, so it's all a bit of reunion up in here.

It's all too lovely. Please, please Davina, do another?

Fashion. Never has there been such an infectious strain of creative expression, popping up in everything like flavour enhancer, sweetening the contents of artistic mediums it previously had not much to do with. But I guess that’s the beauty of this current era of post-post modernism: no creative field of work sits in isolation from another. Fusion has become the way of the future, and artists are appropriating other genres like music and fashion in unique and innovative ways.

In celebration of artistic fusion and the relationship between fashion and the arts, Being Born Again fashion couture show will present 10 collaborative works of well-known Australian designers, including Akira Isogawa and Marnie Skillings, paired with equally esteemed visual artists such as Lindy Lee and Tracey Moffat, to name a few. The show will be held at the National Art School one week prior to Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, and artists will showcase their work on garments specifically designed to reflect their individual aesthetic, providing a unique, bespoke canvas for their compositions.

Cited as “a visceral and intellectual experience at the intersection of art, fashion, music, installation and design” Being Born Again couture show on Thursday, April 22 is the first of what is intended as an annual event and will feature Miss Zahra Stardust on the trapeze, Andy Uprock with his ‘cuprocking’ light display concept and J.D. Reformer and Rosie Deacon with their respective gold and animal installations. The evening's musical cheer will be provided by Washington, WIM and Jack Colwell & the Owls, stacking up to a great night of artistic diversity.

Designers tee up with artists for couture event

Well known designers like Akira Isogawa have been teamed up with leading artists to produce one-off couture pieces for the inaugural 'Being Born Again Couture Fashion Show' in Sydney next month.

As well as working towards staging this event on 22 April at the Cell Block Theatre at the National Art School in Sydney, they will also use the opportunity to showcase their first couture garment as part of their new D&M label. "We're focusing on the crazy yet beautiful, the obsessive yet in control," Reichman said.

Other designers participating in the project include Dhini with artist Pat Brassington, Tim O'Connor and Debra Dawes as well as Marnie Skillings and Tracey Moffatt.

iClothing merges technology and fashion

The idea, to develop garments that have 'invisible' pockets that are designed to store an iPad, was the brainchild of managing director Davina Reichman. "I wanted to find a way to solve the problem of having an iPad with nowhere to put it," Reichman said.

Reichman became well known earlier this year after organising the Being Born Again Couture fashion show where she paired up well known artists with well known designers. For example, Akira Isogawa collaborated with Lindy Lee and similarly, Nicola Fenetti and Guy Peppin, to create unique pieces for the event.
